Five Easy Tips For "Spring Cleaning" Your PC

Tip 1: Get Out The Vacuum! The next time you vacuum, remember to go behind your desktop and make sure it's as dust free as possible. Computer fans suck in air (and dust). When there's too much dust, you run the risk of overheating your computer. If you're comfortable with opening the case, use a can of compressed air and gently blow out the dust inside the computer as well. Please disconnect the computer power cord before you do any of this!
Tip 2: Run Disk Error and Disk Defragmenter: These easy to use programs come with all Windows PC's. Go to: All Programs - My Computer - C-Drive (right click) - Properties - Tools- Click Check Now. Run it. This fixes disk errors. Then follow the same procedure but select Disk Defragmenter. Run It, too. This takes a bit more time, but in essence re-arranges the files on your computer in a logical way to free up space.
Tip 3: Make Sure WiNDOWS UPDATES is Running: Microsoft issues lots of updates for security purposes. If you don't want to get hacked, make sure Windows Updates are running.
Tip 4: Double Check Your Power Management: The little $ 9.00 (or less) Surge Protector you get at hardware stores doesn't work against real electrical outages. Invest in a more robust UPS (about $ 65.00 from WCC). These are true power back up and power management tools. Please use one.
Tip 5: Make Sure Your Data is Backed Up: The most effective strategy for managing your computer MUST include some Back Up insurance. Big, cheap, reliable external hard drives make it easy. But you have to get one, and you have to use one. (see below for more details).
That's it. Five Easy Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Computer. "The computer you save may be your own..."

Parting Shot: Avi, Tahl, and the Mysterious Story of "Aluminum Foil"
Has This Ever Happened To You?
You need a piece of aluminum foil or plastic wrap, and when you pull out the sheet, the whole roll falls out?
Then it unravels on the floor, and you have to re-roll it and put it back in the box?
This has even happened to technical gurus such as ourselves!
Courtesy of the internet, however, we both learned (last week, for the first time) that for many, many years most manufacturers of aluminum foil and plastic wrap have a "lock tab" on each end of the carton.
You simply push it in and never have to worry about the foil jumping out of the box again.
Don't believe us? Go check it out. Look at end of the box of most popular brands of foil. Yep, there's a tab that you just push in.
Sometimes it says "Press Here To Lock". Sometimes not.
Urban legend says it's been around since WW II. More up-to-date news says since around 1996.
We don't know the answer.
Just like we didn't know the tabs were there, or how they got there. A real mystery.
Check it out. Spring is coming.
